The PassPort Building
At the heart of the Passport Building at Zaventem Airport is an impressive, light-filled atrium. Three large, organically shaped planters with built-in benches define the layout of this open space. The tall glass walls let in plenty of natural light and offer employees a unique view of departing airplanes. Outside, everything is in motion, while the greenery inside creates a sense of calm.
However, the original landscaping had lost its vitality. All five Bucida buceras trees had died, and an investigation revealed that the mineral concentration in the substrate was too high. Bringing the atrium back to life would require more than just new trees. We opted for a thorough renovation, respecting the existing architecture and focusing on the future of the plantings.
While the organic shapes and integrated benches were retained, we completely upgraded the entire irrigation system behind the scenes. Each new Bucida buceras was given its own, hidden planter with a separate water reservoir. This allows us to precisely tailor the water supply to the needs of each tree and create optimal conditions for healthy growth.
The existing groundcover plants were also given a new lease on life. Instead of replacing all the Schefflera arboricola, we chose to salvage as many plants as possible. Through intensive rejuvenation pruning, we restored the plants to their former shape. Only the specimens that were of insufficient quality were replaced with new plants.
The result is a lush green atrium where five imposing trees and dense ground cover once again take center stage. The combination of large, organic forms and various shades of green brings a sense of calm and softness to the modern architecture. An inviting environment where employees can work, relax, and socialize, with nature serving as the unifying element.
Even after the renovation, we will continue to provide professional maintenance. This ensures that the greenery receives the proper care and attention it needs to thrive, and that the atrium remains a vibrant, green gathering place.
